PMC and MMPRC’s EMS Journey

In the commitment to fulfill compliance obligations and enhance environmental performance throughout the regular operations, Philsaga Mining Corporation and Mindanao Mineral Processing and Refining Corporation have established an Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard.

The group initiated a comprehensive series of training sessions in 2015 to equip the EMS Working Committee with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively establish, implement, maintain, and continuously improve the Environmental Management System tailored to the operation of both organizations. The official launch of the established EMS took place on November 6, 2015, led by the group’s president, Atty. Raul C. Villanueva, alongside other key members of the top management and the EMS Working Committee. With the implementation of the EMS, the group is dedicated to environmental protection, resource conservation, and the prevention or mitigation of adverse effects resulting from its activities.

Since its inception, the EMS has catalyzed a significant cultural shift within the group, notably enhancing employee awareness and consciousness regarding the environmental impact of the operations. In addition to effectively identifying and controlling generated wastes, efforts to reduce resource consumption have markedly improved the group’s environmental performance. Moreover, the implemented management system ensures adherence to relevant regulatory requirements set forth by various government agencies.

The group was awarded a certificate of conformance to ISO 14001:2004 requirements by a certifying body on June 23, 2016. Subsequently, on April 3, 2018, another certificate of conformance was issued as the group successfully transitioned its EMS to the upgraded ISO 14001:2015 version of the standard. Presently, both organizations maintain an EMS based on ISO 14001:2015 standards effectively promoting resource conservation and controlling the waste streams. Conducting semi-annual internal audits complemented by annual external audits by the certifying body ensures ongoing conformity to subscribed standards and identifies opportunities for further enhancement of the implemented EMS.

These achievements underscore the capability of both Philsaga Mining Corporation and Mindanao Mineral Processing and Refining Corporation to attain world-class status by adhering to international standards. In alignment with the mission and vision, both organizations have embraced the challenge of becoming leading, sustainable mining and ore processing entities in the country while genuinely endeavoring to reciprocate the environment's contributions by employing responsible practices.
